Netizens defend Burna Boy for mocking South Africans as Caucasian woman emerges new Miss SA
Award-winning Afrobeat singer Burna Boy has been defended by Nigerians online after mocking South Africans following the crowning of a Caucasian woman as Miss SA after Nigerian model Chidimma Adetshina withdrew from the pageantry.
Kemi Filani reported that Miss Adetshina, a 23-year-old Law student, won the Miss South African beauty pageant. However, her win was controversial as South Africans questioned her citizenship and took to social media to call for her removal. Adetshina is born to a South African mother and a Nigerian father.
An investigation into Chidimma’s roots by South African Home Affairs discovered that the identity of an innocent South African mother may have been stolen by Adetshina’s mother. This prompted her to withdraw from the competition.
Following her withdrawal, a Caucasian woman, Mia Le Roux, won the pageantry and was crowned at a ceremony held at the Sun Bet Arena at Times Square in Menlyn, Pretoria. The beauty queen becomes the first Miss SA winner who is dead and has a cochlear implant. She will be the first contestant at the Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico with a disability to participate in the competition. The new Miss South Africa walked home with the Mowana crown, a lavish, fully furnished apartment, a Mercedes Benz, R1 million and more prizes.
Reacting to it, Burna Boy, via the micro-blogging platform Twitter, now known as X, mocked them as he noted how a South African didn’t still win the pageant.
His statement didn’t sit well with some South Africans, who took to his comment section to drag him. One South African noted how the Grammy singer was still pained that South Africans didn’t buy his tickets for his last show, which got cancelled.
“Burna Boy hasn’t forgiven South Africans for not buying his tickets on his last show that was cancelled. This tweet of his got bitterness all over it”.

Last month, Burna Boy issued a public service announcement to Nigerians, making it known that he doesn’t use songwriters as any name people see credited on his songs are only producers of the songs or featured artists, not writers. He noted how the Western world considers producers as writers of the instrumentals, and they throw their names on there as writers. Calling himself an Odogwu, Burna made it known that nobody writes for him.
