Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorounmu has revealed why Odion Ighalo retired from the national team.
According to the former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, the striker retired due to long distance flights.
Odion Ighalo retired from the team after Nigeria won bronze medal at the 2019 AFCON tournament in Egypt where he emerged highest goals scorer with five goals.
The announcement came just few days after the squad captain, Mikel Obi, announced his retirement.
“The case of Mikel was not so much of a surprise, unlike that of Ighalo, who I felt could still carry on till 2022.
“I think the difficulty of travelling a long distance from China to Nigeria may have caused him to think about ending his national team duties.
“He is getting older and the chances of getting injuries are higher. That can be made worse with long-distance flights from China,” Shorunmu told Sporting Life.
