John Obi Mikel has confirmed that he will be featuring for the Super Eagles in the 2019 Africa Cup of nations (AFCON) in Egypt.
The captain made this known in an interview with AOIFootball where he revealed that he had a private meeting with coach Gernot Rohr.
He said:
“I met with Coach Rohr and we discussed his plans for the team in the forthcoming tournament. All I can say is that I am delighted and happy because I am coming to the Nations Cup.”
This is coming after Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami spoke against his inclusion in the squad for the AFCON tournament.
According to Segun Odegbami, Rohr should not include Mikel Obi because he’s now a shadow of his old self.
“Recall Mikel? History is against such a decision. Mikel is not the player he once was. We have seen his best and it cannot be recreated or better. What did it fetch?
“The last time we brought back a captain it ended in a disaster that halted the country from going to its first World Cup in 1981. Why are we not taking lessons from history? Why do we keep doing the same things based on sentiments and expecting a different result?
