The Polythechnic in Ibadan has been shut down following a peaceful protest by the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, over unpaid salary arrears.
The News Agency Of Nigeria (NAN) reports that academics and administrative activities have been interrupted in the institution as its gates have been locked.
Due to the protest, NAN reports heavy traffic along the Sango-Eleyele road with workers, students as well as visitors were locked out of the campus.
Speaking on behalf of the union, the Union Chairman, Ibarahim Akande said that NASU has been on an indefinite strike action since January 14.
According to him, the school’s management and the gorvernment are yet to acknowledge the reason for their strike.
“We are agitating for eight months salary arrears owed us by the government since 2017. “We have held series of meeting with the management and Oyo State Government all to no avail.
“So we are agitating for our right; we have shut down the institution because there is nothing we can do than to go on strike. “We are staging a peaceful protest and there will be a press conference at the NLC secretariat today(Tuesday),” Akande said.
