This is the third consecutive opening league game that Bale has scored. In the 2016/17 campaign, he bagged a brace against Real Sociedad in the Estadio Anoeta and the year before also found his name on the scoresheet against Deportivo La Coruna.

“I was pleased with the team in general and Gareth put in a great performance,” said Lopetegui, who also saw Bale head against the crossbar early on.

Barcelona had earlier defeated Alaves 3-0 on Saturday courtesy of a brace from Lionel Messi and a Coutinho strike.
