The immediate ex-governor of Nasarawa state, Aliyu Akwe-Doma, is confirmed dead.
According to his nephew, Ahmed Bako, Akwe-Doma died on the evening of Tuesday, March 6, in a foreign hospital in Israel after a brief illness.
Reports gathered state that sympathisers have already gathered at Akwe-Doma’s house in Orozo, Karshi district of Abuja.
He was governor of Nasarawa state between 2007 and 2011, after which he was defeated by the incumbent governor, Umaru Al-makura.
Former Nasarawa information commissioner, Mamman Alakayi, said in Lafia that Doma died in an Israeli hospital on Tuesday.
“I got a call from the late governor’s son, Umar, this evening, that Baba Doma died in an Israeli hospital at about 7:45 p.m. Nigerian time,” he said.
Alakayi said that the former governor had gone to the hospital to treat an undisclosed ailment three weeks ago.
“We are currently making arrangement for some family members to travel to Israel and convey the remains back home for burial,” he said.
Doma was the governor of Nasarawa State from 2007 to 2011, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
He hailed from Doma Local Government Area of the state.
It can be recalled that there had been previous reports of a money laundering charge of N15 billion against the former governor Akwe-Doma.
Another case involved N2 billion, which he reportedly laundered in the name of Green Forest Investment Limited, a firm he owned.
