Yesterday
we posted a news on the death of one Mercy Olamide Afolaranmi, a
student of Microbiology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, who
was said to have committed suicide for failing a course, CHM 101.
A graduate of the university, Grace, has reacted by posting this message on her Facebook page:
I just read a post about an 100 level student of O.A.U who committed suicide because she had an ‘E’ in a course.
I was curious about the course only to realize it was CHM 101.
If this is true then it’s really unfortunate.
When I was in 100 level, we were told repeatedly that our gra-gra would
go down when we see the result of our first test, which incidentally
was CHM 101.
That course would kill your spirit, crush your esteem
and make you doubt your intelligence. God knows I almost considered
quitting school because I felt I was really dumb.
You would ask yourself if you really passed WAEC and JAMB cos of the ridiculousness of the scores you’d get.
.
I don’t know how they manage to achieve it but it’s been the culture
over the years. Students fear ‘white house’. Now it has come to this?
Suicide!
But seriously what do they expect from students that age, with probably
no prior failing experience and low emotional intelligence
It’s sad enough that it is the first test and exam result they would
get in the university. Even sadder when you think about the time they go
to Ajose just to secure a seat. Some go as early as 3am for an 8am
lecture while some even sleep in there.
.
It’s so sad
RIP dear
