Former Super Eagles coach, Shuaibu Amodu is dead, the NFF announced early Saturday. The technical director of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), and four-time coach of the national team, passed on on Friday night shortly after complaining of chest pain, the NFF said in a post on its Twitter handle.
He was 58.
Mr. Amodu was appointed technical director of the Eagles in April 2016. His death comes barely three days after death of Stephen Keshi, the country’s football legend, who died at the age of 54.
For people who don’t know too much about him, here are 6 things you can know about the coach’s career so far.
1. Before his last appointment, Amodu had coached Nigeria on three different occasions- 1998–1999, 2001–2002 and 2008–2010
2. He was appointed as Head Coach of the Nigerian national side in
April 2008, and was sacked on 6 February 2010 despite reaching third
place with the national side in the 2010 African Cup of Nations.
3. He was once demoted to serve as the coach of the home-based Eagles.
4. Amodu led Nigeria to the AFCON bronze medal at Mali 2002 and
Angola 2010. – Other accomplishments include Nigerian FA Cup titles with
BCC Lions of Gboko and El Kanemi Warriors on multiple occasions.
5. He was appointed technical director of Nigeria’s national teams in May 2013.
6. In November he was named Technical Director of Bendel Insurance F.C.
7. Amodu has coached in Nigeria and overseas. They include: Shooting
Stars, BCC Lions, El Kanemi Warriors, Sharks F.C and Orlando Pirates of
South Africa.
