There are reports of sporadic gunshots in Damaturu, Yobe State.
It is not clear what the details of the situation are but many
believe members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect are making a move to take
over the state capital after overrunning Mubi, another town in the
North east state.
According to Jonathan Gopep, a Channels TV correspondent in Damaturu,
the attack started some minutes before 6am on Monday morning.
He said, “Many people are running helter-skelter. I would be honest
with you; the military are here but they are being professional… careful
not to harm civilians.”
We are yet to get an official confirmation of the said siege.
The call by the Federal Government for an extension of Emergency Rule
in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa has met with stiff opposition in the
National Assembly but deliberations are still ongoing to find a lasting
solution to the lingering impasse.
