VC sacks 400 staff members of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture

The management of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State terminated the appointment of over 400 academic and non-academic staff employed by the erstwhile Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hilary Edeoga. The affected workers were being owed six months’ salary, and the remaining 25 per cent of their entitlements.
The incident caused panic and chaos in the area as the workers protested after resolving to take the matter up with civil society organisations including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union  Congress of Nigeria.
The sacked workers also added that they've lost confidence in the Academic Staff Union of Universities to protect their welfare. The decision to sack the workers was said to have been taken at a recent meeting of the governing council of the MOUAU.
Some of those affected by the purge said they were shocked to receive the letters terminating their appointment because they attended the regularisation interview conducted in 2016 by the former VC.

  3. This newspaper should stop doing a hatchet job. These were simply those that Professor Edoga signed their letters of appointment and backdated by three months, one week after he left office and after they paid bribes ranging from 600k to 800k. The government correctly says they are unaware of their position as staff. Do you sack someone who has never been a staff? The new VC they are vilifying has been towing a vaery dangerous path of using 25% of net salary of genuine staff to pay these undocumented staff since January while he tried to include them in the budget. The university does not even know how to get the money back from them to pay genuine staff the 25% shortfall in salaries since January. If they want to politicize the issue, they should ask the politicians of Abia state to provide the money with which their salary will be paid. Edeoga simply stuffed the university with people who could pay his bribes, having earlier overpopulated the university with his kinsmen from Enugu state.
