FFK, Bode George Gun For PDP chairmanship

A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, will be contesting the position of the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, should the position be zoned to the South-West, The Punch has learnt.

Fani-Kayode’s Media Adviser, Mr. Jude Ndukwe, told Punch that consultations were still ongoing but did not rule out the possibility of the former minister contesting. He, however, said Fani-Kayode was under pressure to run for the position.

Senior members of the party said the South-West would not accept anything less than the chairmanship position.

Bode George also told Punch that he would be running for chairmanship as well.

Father Butchers Son, Dumps Him In Ogun Bush

A father, whose name has yet to be ascertained, was said to have butchered his son, Favour Oyediran on Sunday, after he lured him into the bush near the President Muhammadu Buhari Estate along Siun-Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway.

The victim was said to be living at Abule Agbon, located between Kobape and Abeokuta, with his father, stepmother and her two children.

His own mother was said to have separated from the father. Favour, who is said to be 11 years old, was reported to have been stabbed by the father in the neck, pretended to be dead before his father abandoned him in the bush.

Favour, who later crawled out of the bush, was said to have been rescued by a good Samaritan, who took him to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta.

A source, who pleaded anonymity, said Favour’s father always maltreated him. The father, the source said, had allegedly claimed that the son embarrassed him “too often by reporting him to the Baale each time he is assaulted by father.”

Punch
correspondent, however, paid a visit to the Children’s Ward at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta on Monday, and it was confirmed that Favour was on admission in the hospital.

The Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Mr. Olusegun Orisajo, who led oPunch correspondent to the Ward, prevented our correspondent from seeing the boy.

He entered the ward and conferred with the nurses in charge of his case, and came back and told our correspondent that the victim was in stable condition.

Orisajo said, “The boy is here, his name is Favour. He had undergone surgery and it was successful. He is in stable condition.”

Orisajo, who insisted that the minor’s privacy must be respected, prevented Punch correspondent from interviewing Favour.

When contacted on the case,  the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he had yet to be briefed about the incident by the Divisional Police Officer in whose jurisdiction the incident happened.

He promised to get back to Punch correspondent as soon as he was briefed about the incident.

322 Lagos Inmates Register For WASSCE

The Controller of Prisons, Lagos State Command, Mr Tunde Ladipo, during a recent interview has revealed that nothing less than 322 inmates in Ikoyi and Kirikiri prisons in Lagos State registered for the West African Senior Secondary Examination in the past three years.Ladipo, said that inmates only sat for WASSCE for private candidates for the ordinary level certificate and that 206 of the inmates were from Ikoyi Prison, while 116 were from the Kirikiri Prison, Apapa.
In 2017, Ladipo revealed that at least 75 inmates of Ikoyi Prison registered for this year's WASSCE for private candidates.
It was also revealed that inmates at the Kirikiri Prison do not sit for UTME but secure admission directly into the National Open University of Nigeria, if they pass WASCCE.

Registration of inmates for the examinations depends on sponsorship by well-meaning individuals and groups including churches and non-governmental organisations.

“Assisting inmates to have access to education opportunities was one outstanding way of keeping alive their hope of a successful return to the larger society.
He noted that the Nigeria Prisons Service was designed as a correction and reformation centre.
“We are trying to transform the lives of inmates through reading that could teach them morals after serving their jail terms.
“With these measures, they will easily get integrated into the society at the expiration of their jail terms, ’’ Ladipo said.

Ladipo also hailed Lagos State Government for supporting the command with utility vehicles to facilitate operations.

“The controller-general recorded a remarkable achievement in the last two years with improvement in the welfare and reformation of inmates.
“Inmates are trained in different vocations such as barbing, tailoring, art and design as well as bead making to empower them to be self-employed after their jail terms.
“We thank the state government and NGOs that have been supporting our operations,’’ Ladipo said.
