FG To Enforce N50,000 Fine For Public Smoking
The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health, has launched a campaign to ban smoking in public places including motor parks, shopping malls and health care centres.

In a communiqué, the ministry said according to Section 9 of the Nigeria Tobacco Control Act 2015, once convicted, offenders are liable to a fine of at least N50, 000 and/or six months’ imprisonment.

Tagged the Clean Air Campaign, the ministry said the law would henceforth be taken seriously in a bid to protect and promote the citizens’ right to health, life, physical integrity and safety.

To carry out the campaign successfully, the ministry also said it was being supported by the Cancer Society of Nigeria, World Health Organisation, ONE Campaign, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, Civil Society Organisations and the Tobacco Free Kids based in Washington DC, United States.

The communiqué read, “The World Health Organisation estimates that worldwide, second-hand tobacco smoke is currently responsible for the deaths of about 600,000 people yearly, 80 per cent of which occur in low-income and middle-income countries like Nigeria.

“Smoking in public places is now banned in Nigeria. Section 9 of the Nigeria Tobacco Control Act 2015 stipulates that offenders, once convicted, are liable to a fine of not less than N50,000 or not less than six months’ imprisonment, or both.

“Public places where smoking is prohibited by law in Nigeria include: child care facilities, educational facilities, health care facilities, playgrounds/amusement parks, public parks (gardens), stadia, restaurants/bars, public transportation parks and plazas.

“The Federal Ministry of Health is committed to the fight to ensure a tobacco-free Nigeria, and will in the weeks and months ahead actively collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure enforcement of the Act, and with the National Assembly to ensure that necessary supporting regulation is passed.”

EFCC Declares Jonathan’s Finance Coordinator Wanted
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has declared wanted, Dr. Ngozi Olojeme, the Deputy Chairman, Finance Committee of the Goodluck Jonathan Presidential Campaign Organisation in 2015.

Olojeme, who was Chairman of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund from 2009 to 2015, was accused of cornering $48,485,127 from the NSITF

The accused and some directors in the company allegedly siphoned billions of naira, including funds meant for the payment of allowances of its staff as well as compensation to contributors.

It was learnt that several directors and contractors were invited to explain their own side of the story, many of whom had since returned funds to the EFCC.

An EFCC report, made available to newsmen alleged that the funds were said to have been traced to the accounts of some consultants and contractors, who were believed to be fronts for Olojeme and other directors in the NSITF.

The anti-graft agency report said, “It was discovered that the NSITF accounts in First Bank of Nigeria and other banks have witnessed a total turnover of over N62,358,401,927 between 2012 and 2015 from the Employee Compensation Scheme contributions.

“That out of the N62bn, the Federal Government contributed N13,600,000,000 while the sum of N48,758,401,927.80 was contributed by the private sector. That there were several payments to individuals and companies from the NSITF bank accounts for purported contracts or consultancy services.

“That some individuals and companies that received these payments, in turn, transferred part of the monies directly to the NSITF officials while others transferred huge sums to bureau de change operators who changed them to dollars.”

The report added that Olojeme sent her account officer at FBN to collect $48m from some NSITF contractors through a BDC operator.

“That she has refused to honour invitation and all efforts to get her to come and tell her own side of the story have proved abortive hence her arrest warrant has been obtained from court.

“We ask for the EFCC chairman’s approval to declare the suspect wanted.”

The spokesman for the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said Olojeme had been declared wanted.

He urged members of the public to offer information that could lead to her arrest.

“Yes, she has been declared wanted. Members of the public are advised to give us information that would lead to her arrest,” he said.

Nasarawa To Demolish More Private Radio Stations
Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, has said that his administration will not hesitate to demolish any private radio station and or any other structure found to have flouted the state’s town planning laws.

The governor, who made the statement in Lafia, the capital, during the distribution of relief materials to communities across the state that were devastated by  crisis, called on the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission to ensure that all stations seeking license to operate in Nasarawa must comply with statutory regulations before such is issued.

Al-Makura stated that his administration would  not pay compensation to the management of a recently demolished radio station – Breeze 99.9 FM, Lafia.

He said instead the company would pay a fine to the government for violating approved land laws.

The governor said, “Nasarawa State Government will not pay any compensation as being suggested in some quarters but will rather ensure that the management of Breeze FM pays the required fine for violating laid down rules.

“You cannot have a radio station where the same place is the residence of the person, and it is used as a restaurant, business centre and a prayer house. It does not happen anywhere.

“All houses built that have not adhered to development regulations, whether they are residential apartments, factories, radio stations, they will all be affected.

“The state government has already directed development control and the Ministry of Lands to identify all homes, offices, commercial centres that do not conform or abide by regulations and give them statutory notices.

“After notices are given, their structures will definitely go down the way Breeze FM went. I am using this opportunity to call on the people of Nasarawa State to always abide by the rules and regulations.”

Reacting to the development, Executive Director of Breeze FM, Mr. Nawani Aboki, denied claims that the radio station violated town planning laws, insisting that they would not pay any sort of fine to the government.

He said, “We will not pay anything to the government, instead it is the government that would pay us compensation for infringing on our rights.”

Abiara Warns Northern, Eastern Youths Against Making Inciting Statements
The General Evangelist of the Christ Apostolic Church Worldwide, Dr. Samuel Abiara, has called on youths from the northern and eastern parts of the country to desist from making statements that could put the country into chaos. He said such would not do the nation any good. He said grievances should be resolved amicably, noting that Nigeria had yet to recover from the last civil war that claimed millions of lives and destroyed properties.

“This is not the time to raise issues that can cause chaos at all,” he said, adding, “Nigeria needs to be united and peaceful for government to function properly.”

According to a statement on Friday, Abiara, who spoke at a revival organised by Joy Cometh Ministries in Lagos recently, called on northern elders to calm their youths, stressing that there is no peace in chaos.

He called for prayers for the President, the Acting President and leaders at all levels, saying people should not be tired of praying for the country.

He added, “God laid few things in my heart for the country and Nigerian people. There is a call on all wicked leaders to check themselves and stop their evil ways. God is going to visit all wicked leaders in Nigeria with His wrath if they refuse to repent. Also, a huge calamity is coming upon the whole world soon. It is only those who repent of their sins and return to God that will be saved.”

I’m Nigeria’s Next President, Fayose Declares
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, declared himself as the next President of Nigeria, Punch reports.

They report that, the governor boasted that he and his party have the attributes to wrest power from the President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress in 2019.

Fayose said he had the penchant for taking powers from people having defeated two former governors (Niyi Adebayo and Fayemi) in governorship elections.

“I have a penchant for taking powers; that one in Buhari’s hand. I will take it. I’m going straight to that (Presidential) Villa. I’m the next President. I want to be the next President of Nigeria. My own won’t be this change that has brought nothing, we are going to represent the people well and tell them the truth.”
