Queen Wuraola-Zynab Ogunwusi is the
queen of the Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi. In the last 7 months, she
has shocked a lot of people around the Palace at the fast pace at which
she settled into her role as the wife of Ooni of Ife, one of the most

has shocked a lot of people around the Palace at the fast pace at which
she settled into her role as the wife of Ooni of Ife, one of the most
powerful monarchs in Nigeria.
She has dropped her previous high
profile life-style and has settled into her traditional role as the
Yeyeluwa. That is why all over the palace and its environs this pretty
queen is usually called Yeye, Yeye, Yeye. Yeyeluwa is the title for the
queen or the most senior queen of Ife, as the first lady. The most
senior wife of late Ooni Sijuwade has become the immediate past Yeyelua

Her life-style has changed. She is very
busy these days attending to traditional duties around the palace and
inside Ile-Ife. She atimes leads some of the rites. She leads the
traditional woman in the traditional rites they engage in, her fashion
style has also changed. She now wears only white and she is always
bedecked in coral beads not only on her neck, but ankles.

Gone are all her fitted dresses and trendy outfits. She now wears flowing dresses, boubous.
And she is very, very respectful. She
shows courtesy to each and every person that steps into the Palace and
she is getting used to her roles.

City people can authoritatively reveal
that after she settled in as the wife of Ooni, the monarch got elderly
people to sit her down for months to lecture and tutor her on her duties
as the Queen of Ooni. Like an insider explained, “it was like going
back to school for her. All the sessions she had with them prepared her
for the new role she now plays”.

Unknown to many, she has an NGO which
also takes her time. The Queen of Ile-Ife Foundation is an organization
committed to expanding the possibilities for children, women and young
people to lead healthy and productive lives. We are an economy-focused

Ogunwusi recently paid a surprise visit to the children of St Peters
Anglican Primary School in Ile-Ife. Every child deserves a champion – an
adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of
education and insists that they become the best that they can be and
dream beyond the confines of their environment.

I encourage everyone reading this, to be
that champion to a child around near you. Arm them with books, pencils,
novels, and food. Teach them to read and empower themselves. For
education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the
world especially in a nation like ours. #OloriWuraola

We learned that orphans are easier to
ignore before you know their names. They are easier to ignore before you
see their faces. It is easier to pretend they’re not real before you
hold them in your arms. But once you do, everything changes.”

Our women are taught the art of weaving
fabrics and create high quality products for trade and sale to enable
them to earn money to support themselves and their families. They are
also trained in the craft of tie-dying to create traditional scarves,
garments and bags. Household items such as soaps, shea and cocoa butter

Ogunwusi at the Internally Displaced Peoples Camp in Abuja where
thousands of people fleeing conflict and poverty in Nigeria due to Boko
Haram reside. More than 14,000 families are living in Abuja’s IDP camps
and over 1 million people are displaced across Nigeria due to
extremists. This is a call to each and every single Nigerian to do what
we can, wherever we are, to help our brothers and sisters, our children
in dire need. This is not just a national problem, this is a global
crisis. We cannot improve this situation by partial responses and
relaxed methodologies. It’s time for us to come together as a community
and as a nation to face the complexities of this matter.
