Kogi NDLEA arrests 94, seizes 2 tons of Cannabis
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kogi Command, said on Saturday that it had arrested 94 suspects, including seven women, over drug related offences between January and June.
Alhaji Idris Bello, Commander of the agency in the state, disclosed this in a statement made available in Lokoja. The statement was issued ahead of the forthcoming 2016 United Nations Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with the theme ”Listen First,” scheduled for June 26.
Bello said that the command also seized two tons of cannabis sativa (Indian hemp) and other psychotropic substances like Tramadol, Diazepam, Rohypnol and Codeine. He said that nine drug law offenders were sentenced to various jail terms in prison upon conviction. According to him, the prosecution of a suspected gang leader, Al-Hassan Idris, alias 40-40, on the orders of the Office of National Security Adviser is on-going.
Bello said the command also impounded six vehicles, counselled 58 drugs users and rehabilitated seven drugs addicts including a girl during the period. He also revealed that over 200 drivers were screened for possible abuse of different drugs as part of the company’s measures to reduce the rate of drug-induced road accidents. According to him, the command, in the last six months, also arrested and transferred non-drug related suspects to the police and destroyed 23 tons of drugs.
He said that the command, apart from dislodging a drug haven in Obajana, discovered and destroyed hectares of cannabis farms in Isanlu, Ife-Olukotun, Ogori-Magongo hills and Ankpa. Bello said the NDLEA also secured an order of forfeiture for 39 vehicles and nine motorcycles, out of over 63 of such vehicles used for the conveyance of hard drugs. He said the command was facing challenges of inadequate operational vehicles, lack of rehabilitation facilities for drug addicts and insufficient funding among others. The commander appealed to citizens to report cases of drug abuse and suspected persons to the authorities to help curb the menace of production, trafficking and abuse of hard drugs. (NAN)

Prison authority debunk reports of MEND leader, Charles Okah, escaping from Kuje prison
The Nigerian Prison Service have debunked online media reports that leader of MEND  militant group and the suspected mastermind of the 2010 Independence day bomb blast that killed over 27 people in Abuja, Charles Okah, had escaped from Kuje prison in Abuja where he was being held. Sahara Reporters this morning reported that Charles Okah and one other prison inmate had escaped by scaling the fence of Kuje Prison.
However the spokesperson for the Nigerian Prisons Service, Francis Enobore in an interview with Premiumtimes this afternoon, debunked the report. He said Charles Okah was still in prison custody.
“It is not true (that he escaped). He is there (Kuje prison) hale and hearty. The comptroller of prisons in charge of the FCT was there less than 30 minutes ago and he saw him there. I spoke to the controller. Yes there was an incident yesterday, but Henry Okah was not involved. The Comptroller of prisons has ordered an investigation and that is going on. We want to know if anybody escaped and if yes, what are their identities.”he said.

Day-old baby found dead in Ekiti river
The body of a day-old baby was Saturday morning discovered in a river along Ijogbo/Atikankan junction in Ado-Ekiti.
Residents and commuters plying the route all rushed to the scene to take a look at the dead baby.
Some residents and shop owners around the area rained curses on the mother of the baby for dumping such an innocent male child in the river after giving birth.
The baby was dumped along side the placenta.
Residents suspect that the baby must have been killed by the mother and dumped inside the river at night.
One of the residents, who declined to mention her name, said the baby must have been dumped into the river by a prostitute.
“Only a wicked woman, who lacks conscience will do such an act. The woman does not know the consequences of her action. In a situation where some women are crying to God to bless them with a child, another one gave birth to such a handsome baby boy and dumped him inside the river. What a sad situation”, one of the residents lamented.
The incident caused traffic gridlock along the busy Ijigbo/Irona market road as residents, drivers, and okada riders stopped at the scene.
Policemen later got to the place and took the body of the baby away‎.

Petrol price now  N139 in Calabar’
A fuel station in Calabar, Prosperous Oil and Gas Limited, on Wednesday reduced the price of Premium Motor Spirit from N145 per litre to N139, citing the need to lighten the burden on consumers as the main reason.
This is coming barely one week after an outlet owned by Basol Petroleum Limited located in the Calabar-South axis of the Cross River State capital had also brought down the unit price of PMS for the same reason.
Group Managing Director of Prosperous Oil and Gas Limited, Mr. Abiodun Isinkaye, said the company was in sympathy with consumers that suffered so much hardship during the period of extreme fuel scarcity.
As an independent petroleum outlet, Isinkaye noted, however, that the reduction in price also meant small profit for his company.
“This reduction in price of PMS to N139 per litre is starting with our Calabar headquarters. It will extend to other stations of ours across the country. Loyal customers will also get gifts when they buy fuel.  It is meant to ease the burden of consumers,” he said.
