The people of Benin kingdom in Edo state have been told to observe an
unusual rite, which is not to cook with any form of fire on Sunday,
5th of June. This is in honour of the late Oba Eradiauwa who passed away.
According to a press release signed by the secretary to the Benin
Traditional Council, Mr Frank Irabor, the order is in accordance with
Benin customs and traditions and is in continuation of the 15 days
funeral rites of the late Oba.
All indigenes and non-indigenes based in Benin kingdom are
reportedly expected to observe the Igberimwin rites of no cooking with
fire.
Ummm how are people supposed to eat though? Is there a “cooking
with fire” brigade that will go from house to house to make sure
residents comply with this directive? I also hope NEPA plans to give the
residents light the entire day so they can at least use their electric
cookers?
